Oceanside is a mosaic of beautiful people, varying in race, ethnicity, and military association, brought together by a love for the sounds and scents of the Pacific. Though the ocean is chilling, the community is warm and inviting, especially to military families.
Approximately 520 of MiraCosta's estimated 2,000 graduates celebrated the college’s 80th commencement ceremony. Let's learn more about some of this year's standouts.

The annual Oceanside International Film Festival has a lot to offer, its 2015 schedule and list of venues have now been posted on its website. North County San Diego’s biggest film festival's popularity is attributed to the following success formula since its very foundation in 2009: “Vacation-Feel / Kickback Attitude (near San Diego) + Profound Film Culture (close to Los Angeles) = Artistic Freedom. Yes, this is Oceanside!” And local, out-of-state, and international filmmakers have an opportunity to showcase their films in front of OIFF-2015 audiences, submerge into its atmosphere, and experience the artistic freedom professed by the festival.
UT San Diego has named MiraCosta College student David Garcia as Young Latino of the Year at the 2015 San Diego Latino Champions Awards ceremony.
Garcia immigrated to the United States when he was five years old and has lived in the Libby Lake Community his entire life. In March of 2013, Garcia was shot seven times, including a bullet to his head at Libby Lake Park. After recovering, the once “aimless” kid used his traumatic experience as a wake-up call and began focusing his time and energy to serving his community. Garcia helped launch the STEP UP mentoring program between Project REACH high school students and Libby Elementary students. ![]() The Oceanside Art Walk is growing and becoming bigger and better than ever before. The theme for the June 5th Art Walk is "Ode to Oceanside" featuring artists that represent our favorite city. Oceanside Art Walk began in August 2015 with over 21 venues in downtown Oceanside participating. Over the months, venues have traded in and out and artists have come and gone as well. However the art has remained alive and strong and the Art Walk has worked towards its never ending goal of cultivating the culture of art throughout the city. Ode to Oceanside brings the Art Walk back to its roots and truly allows the art to connect to the city, which is fitting for this stage in the Art Walk’s life. Downtown Oceanside is the hub of this city and that is where our growing art scene needs to be fostered, loved and appreciated. There is no better way to remind the city of this art bounty in our back yard than dedicating an entire night to the beauty that surrounds Oceanside every day in the sea, mountains, murals, streets, people, architecture and more. Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation will hold the 5th annual “Write On, Oceanside!” Literary Festival underwritten by Oceanside Public Library in partnership with the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library. The event celebrates San Diego’s North County authors. This year North County’s largest literary event will be held Saturday, July 18, 2015, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm in and around the Oceanside Civic Center Plaza and Community Rooms.

On September 11, 2001, while sitting in a high school classroom, Richard Garcia witnessed the World Trade Center in New York City catch fire and collapse. That day, Garcia marched into a recruitment office to join the Marine Corps. “I was only 17, so my dad didn’t want to sign for me at first,” said Garcia. “I told him he served in the Marine Corps, so why can’t I?” Without further argument, Garcia’s dad signed the release and sent his son off to boot camp. Garcia spent almost a decade in the Marine Corps, including a tour in Afghanistan. In 2011, he left as a sergeant and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

Victor B. is an artist. He creates all of his artwork using just a handful of colored pencils, paper and months of focus. Victor also lives with a developmental disability. Many people do not know that some of the best artists today deal with some form of disability. Such is the case for 23-year-old Victor, who moved to the United States from Mexico 10 years ago and has used art to communicate his thoughts to the world—and the results are stunning. Victor has created numerous artworks; his most recent was a six-foot-wide panoramic landscape depicting a church in his hometown of Pueblo, Mexico. The piece includes detailed illustrations of Catholic saints and popular Mexican celebrities surrounded by thousands of colorful flowers. By Kierstin Hill

Her life hasn’t been the same since. Phillips, who had lost her home, her job and her marriage, drove to the Oceanside Campus not really sure what she was looking for. What she found was a supportive faculty and staff who encouraged the struggling single mom to go to college. They encouraged her to take advantage of counseling and other programs that MiraCosta College offered. And they encouraged her to apply for every scholarship for which she qualified. Oceanside, the name says it all. Just the name inspires and conjures thoughts of ocean views, sandy beaches and a life of leisure. As early as September of 1883, just a few months after a townsite was laid out, Andrew Jackson Myers, the city’s founder began marketing the town as a seaside resort. He arranged excursions from San Bernardino and the San Diego Union reported that the train bringing visitors from inland to our coast consisted of thirteen cars and about 760 passengers.
The following year in 1884 the San Bernardino Index reported that Oceanside would soon become “a favorite resort of sea-side pleasure seekers of this county.” A large wooden stairway was built from the bluff providing access to the beach and another newspaper reported that, “People have commenced to arrive at Oceanside for summer bathing. G.W. Graves and family and others are now there enjoying themselves in surf-bathing and fishing.” By Kristi Hawthorne
For decades, the City of Oceanside endeavored to have a recreational harbor. In 1949 a development and study of a proposed harbor was made by Leeds, Hill and Jewett for the City of Oceanside. However, the military at Camp Pendleton were opposed to all harbor proposals and plans primarily because needed land and access was needed from the military base. In 1958 General Ridgley stated he would “interpose no objection to the concept” of the Oceanside Harbor constructed on Camp Pendleton Property. That year the Corps of Army Engineers requested a feasibility study of the proposed harbor. A delegation of Oceanside officials visited Washington D.C. in December of 1958 to discuss details with U.S. Marine Corps, the Bureau of Yards & Docks and the Secretary of the Navy. ![]() The Oceanside Chamber was lucky to attend the Ribbon Cutting ceremony at Mallard Reverse Mortgage this February. You only have to spend a few minutes with Joshua and Rebekah Van Orden to understand why they started their business, Oceanside Therapy Group. It's impossible to not recognize the passion they have for family and children. Since December of 2009, Oceanside Therapy Group has provided a much needed "one stop shop" for Pediatric Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy, mostly for children of military families. Prior to opening their own business, Rebekah was working as a speech language pathologist in Chula Vista and Joshua had just completed his licensing to become a financial advisor with Edward Jones. Around this time they had their first child, a daughter, and Rebekah took 6 months off from work to be with her. When the six months were over, Rebekah found that leaving her daughter to go back to work was not an option for her. By Lauren Alvey
Stan Quinn, owner of Quinn’s Rapid Recharger, has lived in Oceanside for 27 years. He began Quinn’s Rapid Recharger in 1996 and has been building the company up ever since. It all started when Stan began to look around for self-employment options. He was looking to be able to spend more time with his family by setting his own hours- something you can really only do when you are in business for yourself. Being in the computer industry in the late 90’s, Stan found that he could teach himself how to rebuild printer cartridges and quickly built a business around doing just that. In fact, Stan credits the invention of wireless intern connection and subsequent creation of online video-streaming sites as what gave him the in-depth knowledge of printers and cartridge repair he shares with his customers today. |
